Children are naturally inclined to pet and fondle a pup or dog, but most animals mistake these friendly overtures as threats or attacks. Guard your child against probable mishaps with these handy hints:
• Do not run to a dog
• Do not touch an unknown dog through the fence or restricted areas through which the animal can only see an approaching hand.
• Do not pat a dog that is growling, showing its teeth or seems to be in an unpleasant mood.
• Allow the dog to sniff your hand before petting it.
• Do not grab at the dog
• Do not touch a dog when s/he is eating
• Do not put your face close to the dog's while playing with him.
• Do not make alarming moves or loud sounds while approaching a dog. Speak softly and gently to the dog and then pat him.
• Do not run if you are being chased by a dog. Standing still will make the dog retract his steps. |
