Dogs are most prone to catch ear infections that can develop into nasty gashes and wounds if not treated on time. Dogs suffer from infection of external ear canal and middle ear canal.
Those with long, dangling ears like Cocker Spaniels and Basset Hounds are most likely to catch such infections as also those with hairy inner flaps. It is bacteria that generally cause the infection as also yeast and accumulated wax.
Bodily infections can also lead to ear infections.
Dogs generally show discomfort by their shaking head or scratching ears. Often ears turn red and inflamed, giving out an offensive odor accompanied by a black or yellowish discharge. Dogs who tilt head constantly are suffering from middle ear infection.
Since it is difficult for a layperson to determine what is leading to the ear infection it is best to seek medical help.
However as a pet owner, one must ensure that no water enters the dog's ears and they stay relatively dry.
Cleaning the ear weekly is another way of preventing ear infections. |
