
Here’s a comprehensive checklist:
• Get an up-to-date antivirus program.
• Download new definitions weekly because of the rapid spread of e-mail-based viruses.
• Never open attachments that are executable programs (ending in .exe).
• Do not open a document with a macro in it. Typically these are Microsoft Word and Excel programs. Generally it will ask you if you want to enable macros when you open the attachment. Press no. This will keep the virus from activating, but as long as you have the document, the virus is there and you might forget to disable the macro. So the best thing to do is to delete those documents.
