When you read about Aladdin’s fabled genie who could work magic at his master’s whims, have you ever wondered if the genie actually worked magic or was he an ingenious worker…We think it was ingenuity that won the genie his place in the sun! Like the genie, you too can transform your home (almost magically) into a private haven, here’s how:
• The most important point to bear in mind while doing up a room is the visual effect that the room has. In case you place a dark surfaced wooden item in the room do place a lighter coloured object, preferably a glass piece on the surface. The break between the two surfaces will enhance the appeal of both.
• Un-cluttering a closed space will (obviously) lend it an open, airy look. However it is difficult (at times) to beef up a somber, empty room. Adding a planter or even a single large wooden artifact would add colour and appeal to the room.
• Tossing around a lot of cushions in different colours will lend the room a cozy, comfortable feel. Using different shades will also add to the appeal. Avoid opting for different sizes and shapes in cushions. These can be visually annoying.
• Here is some good news for antique collectors. Do not wait to crack that great bargain on the coffee table or mantle piece. A metal or stone sculpture or any other tiny (unusual, mind you) knick knack can add (or enhance) the old world charm of a room.
• Balancing glass on old, wooden brackets is a great idea to replace a common place coffee table. Get hold of some unique, designer pieces in wood or stone and let your imagination get the better of you.
• Choose colors according to your temperament. While reds and yellows are hot colors, blues and greens are the cooler ones. Use these to paint your walls and ceilings.
• Having the ceiling a shade lighter than the walls will make the room appear higher than it actually is.
• As far as possible stay within the same shade family while experimenting with the finish types matte for the walls and glossy for doors and windows.
• Mount curtains and other window accessory high up on the walls. Let the fabric fall a bit in a heap on the ground, it will give the room an air of elegance.
• Use pictures and frames to give the room a modern, evolved look. These accessories add space to a room and make it look bigger. In fact adding a screen to the room will actually create more dwelling space.
