Almost 85 per cent animal bites are known to contain potentially dangerous bacteria. Don’t ignore puppy snaps or kitten bites as playful nips (that are not harmful). These nips could turn very dangerous if left untreated. A few must observe basics in dealing with animal bites:
a. Wash off the wound with warm water and an anti-bacterial soap (Dettol, Lifebouy etc). Apply a coat of antibiotic and wrap in sterile bandage.
b. If the bite is a deep, bleeding cut, stem down the blood flow with a clean cloth held firmly over the wound. Once blood flow is under control, wash the affected area with antibacterial soap and dress with sterile gauze.
c. If the animal is a stray or wild one, one can never be extra cautious; call the animal department, which will keep a check on the animal to spot any abnormal behaviour. If it is a pet, find out if relevant vaccines have been administered. Rabies, are generally transferred through animal bites hence one must be extra careful.
You must seek medical help if the bite results in a deep puncture or results in jagged skin around the hands, feet or face (as major blood vessels are located in this area). In case the bite develops into a swelling or turns red, seek medical help pronto!
