If you've resolved to start on Yoga this new year, there's no better way to start than with Pranayama - the basic breathing exercise.
Pranayama is one of the first asanas that beginners are taught in yoga. It is a simple breathing exercise that controls the involuntary, continuous actions of inhaling and exhaling, by arresting and regulating the breath.
Prana is the vital energy that moves us and with Pranayama, one learns to channelise this energy for physical and mental health. Pranayama controls the breath. And through the breath, the body and the mind. Headaches and vision problems are only some of the side effects that result if the asana is done incorrectly.
After mastering the simple alternate breathing technique, you can try out other techniques of Pranayama. You should begin by practising for a couple of minutes each day and gradually increase until you can do it for 10 minutes each day.
Pranayama should be done outdoors in the morning. If you're indoors, try to be close to an open window. |
